Last thing I remember I stopped short falling apart With nothing but the moonlight To fend off the dark this time And I can’t call my friends I mean like, what if they pick up? Though I’m up to my neck in quicksand I wouldn’t definitely say that I was stuck Told them I’ll be making waves But haven’t made a ripple in a pond And secretly I knew it all along But can I pay for it later? I was trying to be somebody else I’m sorry now I’m sorry now I’m looking in from the outside Dunno how it feels to be “doing alright” I got lost somehow It doesn’t matter now Climb a mountain tell no one I live under a rock, just outside rock bottom I’d like to see me dig my way out of this one I mean, you get it but, you don’t really get it You’ve never won Am I the only one still playing by the rules? And does quick and unsteady always lose? I can’t believe that it’s up to me to choose Just bury it beneath the other ones Lying in my bed, I just wanna go home Can I pay for it later? I was trying to be somebody else I’m sorry now I’m sorry now I’m looking in from the outside Dunno how it feels to be “doing alright” I got lost somehow Doesn’t matter now Can I pay for it later? I’m a wannabe nobody I’m sorry now I’m sorry now I’m looking in from the outside Dunno how it feels to be “doing alright” I got lost somehow Doesn’t matter now

Tundra 03:06
I’ve been fighting my way through a tundra A lost pariah in the winter sun just begun To revel in reprehension Above drastic lands far flung you’ll abide Even a subversion Doesn’t faze me now I’ve done loneliness A blurred lens could guess But you must leap before you look I’ve been pining blindly in the tundra This doesn’t have to be the way the story ends Steady holding don’t let go I promise I’ll be there I promise I’ll be there This can’t wait another day Hell for leather again Just like a thousand lifetimes before It never ends so I had cause to why I left And when somebody lights a firestorm in your soul Outward it shines And there’s no way I could Don’t let go. Don’t let go please don’t go It’s critical, don’t let go, don’t let it go (tanto te amo a ti) I’ve been fighting my way through a tundra A lost pariah in the winter sun just begun Steady holding don’t let go I promise I’ll be there I promise I’ll be there

Moonbathing 03:19
I’m not at home anymore I keep dreaming of war I’m pining for the beaten path Lost in the weeds at last So hard to see the forest for the trees When you’re a green alien like me Never have I sank this low My head below the waves swallowing Water in my lungs but I can’t feel it And then begins my spirit drifting Pleading with me not to let go I just don’t believe I really mean it I wasn’t looking for the secret garden First I tripped then I stumbled And I fell behind that curtain As subtle as a triceratops Taking a walk across the rooftops The worst and best is yet to come And that’s a hill I’m prepared to die on “I think I was someone” I whispered “That was just a dream” Came a reply from the void So lay my head down on the soil Never have I sank this low My head below the waves swallowing Water in my lungs but I can’t feel it And then begins my spirit drifting Pleading with me not to let go I just don’t believe I really mean it

about

Finally, all together as they were originally intended, WannabeNobody, Tundra and Moonbathing compile into '0H, ARE TH3Y L1KE wEE 90s P0P Songs 0r, no?' This title came from what I imagined somebody might ask if they'd heard the older Kelp stuff first, and then heard this. To me, they are just wee 90s pop songs, they don't reflect where I think Kelp should go. They're more like an ingredient that I'm chucking into my discography quite early on in the cooking process, to flavour my complete works and demonstrate that one of my brush strokes can be "wee pop songs."

These three songs came together fairly quickly, which is unusual for me. I have to thank the Arts Council of Northern Ireland for the funding which allowed me to produce the EP.

I will talk briefly about the artwork. I was checking into this hotel in Brussels. It was a pretty seedy place, and there was this really dingey fridge weirdly positioned in the "lobby" and very understocked, bit depressing looking, so I was like "that's class" (obviously), took a picture and later created what I didn't know at the time was going to be the cover art for the EP. I digitally replaced the drinks in the fridge with some of my own purpose made brands. You can see Kelp Kola, Seaweed Soda, Les Club Tropicales and Sea Water.
Initially I just wanted to bang out this picture of the fridge, but after near enough 2 months working on it (I'm not very proficient at adobe illustrator) I thought "this has to be something now." As I was planning on do the EP release of these 3 songs, I thought, "actually that's worked out quite nice - the picture sort of matches the title."

Also, if you're ever in Brussels, avoid the Hotel Windsor. It's a reeeealll shit hole, and they know it.

about

Kelp Belfast, UK

Presenting the misadventures of a miniature deep-sea diver fishbowl figurine.

I don't know that there's room in music for a lounge act fronted by an inch high, ethereal deep sea diver with a preoccupation for vocoders and additive synthesis; but if there is, I intend to fill it with the gaudiest of cutting edge Vaporwave elevator-jingles. ... more
